Profile

Thomas Nisley earned his Ph.D. in political science from the University of Florida (2002). His doctoral dissertation examined the relationship between domestic norms about political and civil rights in the United States and the U.S.’s promotion of democracy abroad. Dr. Nisley’s primary field of study is International Relations, with secondary fields of study in American Government and Comparative Politics.

Dr. Nisley has held teaching positions at Wright State University, St. Mary’s University, the University of Minnesota, Morris, and Southern Polytechnic State University. Thomas Nisley’s areas of interest in teaching and research include Latin American politics, security studies, and U.S. foreign policy. He has published articles in peer-reviewed journals such as Questions in Politics, Politics & Policy, International Politics, and the Journal of American Studies.

Before his career in academia, Thomas served for 27 months as a Peace Corps Volunteer (PCV) in the Dominican Republic. He lived and worked in the town of Vallejuelo in the province of San Juan. As a PCV, he worked with a local youth organization and helped them organize community development projects.
